DISCUSSION & ANALYSIS

In the play Othello, Shakespeare makes it so the women such as Emilia and Bianca are disrespected and treated like dirt. It's like the men such as Iago think that they can do whatever they want and he believes the woman should not be trusted. In the play Iago thinks his wife, Emilia, is a hideous woman and a filthy whore and even though she was aware of all these insults she still loved him to the end. Emilia even helped him set up Othello and Desdemona because she thought it would reignite the flame of their sexual candle of passion. Shakespeare also showed how men get jealous very easily when it comes to women, like when Othello got mangled with rage when Iago convinced him that Cassio and Desdemona are having sexual relations and that she gave him Othello's mother's handkerchief.

We focus on the relationships between two people in love, but we never speak about how Othello's relationship with his mother was. If Othello was that angry about Desdemona misplacing his Mother's handkerchief then he must have an insane amount of respect for his mother, and that handkerchief is all he has to remember her by so he must have a feeling of ownership to it, as he does with Desdemona. His feeling of ownership of her drove him into killing Desdemona and attempting to kill Cassio. The play Othello even has some similarities to some of the most popular shows on t.v: Vampire Diaries, Arrow, and Hemlock Grove, because their plots are all about guys being jealous about girls. It reminds me of Vampire Diaries in specific because jealousy even drives two brothers against each other, and completely ruins their love for one another. Sometimes nothing can tear a man apart like jealousy for a woman, you can see it anywhere. At a party, in the mall, at school, maybe even at McDonalds, but it happens all the time.

TEXT TO WORLD

There are some similiarities between the World and Othello. Just the other week I read some thing in the newspaper about a husband pouring boiling water on his wifes face and leaving her in the basement for 11 days. This was an unforgivable act where a man probably didnt trust his wife and killed her because of jealousy, just like when Othello killed Desdemona. This could also be just an act of pure evil and disrespect, like when Iago killed Emilia. Guys get jealous over girls all the time too, so that part of Othello still shows in the World today. I once read a saying: "A jealous eye sees nothing but green", and that is clearly true in the play Othello. Everybody gets jealous and everyone mistreats their wives and girlfriends and just women in general. Shakespeare really showed us a huge aspect of how male and female relationships work and I personally think he was close to dead on.

Jealousy at it's finest

TEXT TO SELF

I get jealous all the time too don't get me wrong. In fact, I'm probably one of the most jealous people I know. I had this girlfriend once, and I saw her talking to some guy and I was really angry so I went up to him and tried to fight him. Later on did I find out that the guy she was talking to was her cousin. Hell I've even got the shit kicked out of me for talking to another guys ex-girlfriend. It was like he was Othello, she was Desdemona, I was Cassio and the alcohol was Iago. But also like the play Othello, he acted as if he owned her, and that if he couldn't have her no body can. That is one of the most classic cases of jealousy. I see it happen everywhere and it's even happened to me. It's not like us guys can resist being jealous when we see other guys talking to our girls, but we need to trust our ladies and know that they won't be unfaithful. So long story short Shakespeare knew that and showed it in the play, and I know I could learn to trust my girlfriend more because I don't want to become a "green-eyed monster".

Jealousy is a monster and it kicked my ass
